Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Dylan Does Devil

Happy Monday! Came across this bootleg Dylan vid on youknowwhere featuring Bob and his acoustic band doing "Friend of the Devil" on 4/17/97 in Providence, RI. Pretty sure a few other Garcia/Hunter compositions have passed through Dylan's rotation since Jer died (Alabama? West LA? anyone know for sure?). Here's more proof of the mutual admiration (extended solos and all)...

Dylan on Jerry: "There's no way to measure his greatness or magnitude as a person or as a player. I don't think eulogizing will do him justice. He was that great - much more than a superb musician with an uncanny ear and dexterity. He is the very spirit personified of whatever is muddy river country at its core and screams up into the spheres. He really had no equal. To me he wasn't only a musician and friend, he was more like a big brother who taught and showed me more than he'll ever know. There are a lot of spaces and advances between the Carter Family, Buddy Holly and, say, Ornette Coleman, a lot of universes, but he filled them all without being a member of any school. His playing was moody, awesome, sophisticated, hypnotic and subtle. There's no way to convey the loss. It just digs down really deep."

Amen.

Of all the eulogies bestowed on Jerry, no question that Dylan's was the most poignant and appropriate. They were certainly kindred spirits in many ways. When we lost Jerry I wondered about how the world would respond to the loss of Dylan...and already regret that fateful day.

Thanks for the link and the Eulogy, I had never read that before.

I did see The Dead and dylan in Tampa a few years back and they did a fine version together of Devil.

I got chills reading the eulogy, and it isn't the first time I've seen it. Too have someone as huge as Dylan say these words, you must be a unique shining star.
